A strange turn of events soon provides Florence with the perfect opportunity to step into the life she has always wanted. While most of Andrews's tricks in this book have been used before, she employs them in new ways. In an era that is overrun by psychological thrillers, managing to truly surprise readers is an increasingly difficult feat. Andrews accomplishes this, and more importantly, she plays fair. Upon completing the novel, a quick review will show that multiple clues were placed directly in the reader's path. This expert combination of classic detective fiction and suspense thriller sets "Who is Maud Dixon? " apart from the pack. There is another element that elevates this novel. Florence is a complicated character, but she does elicit sympathy. Like many people, she constantly debates whether her life is enough, or if she should strive for more. Andrews devotes ample time in the book's first third to Florence's inner thoughts, and this helps make her seem even more real to the reader.
